Local life in Chertsey

GENERAL
The development of Chertsey was apparently due to it's status as an island surrounded by marshland, the River Thames and it's tributary streams.

In 666AD a famous monastery was established and became one of the wealthiest religious houses in Surrey. The monks were responsible for the establishment of the town in the 12th century and archaeological excavations suggest that the town was surrounded by a ditch.

Chertsey was a centre for trade in the local area with an economy based on agriculture and market gardening.

Tile and brickmaking was an important industry in the area from the 13th to 20th century.

In 1848 Chertsey Railway Station opened and the town expanded due to the regular communication possibilities with London.

Chertsey retains a town centre full of character with modern shopping facilities, bars, restaurants and it's own health club and museum.
